China’s trade surplus hit a fresh high of USD 94.5 billion in December 2021, topping market forecasts of a surplus of USD 745 billion as exports stayed robust while import growth slowed sharply. For full 2021, the trade surplus also widened to a record peak of USD 676.4 billion, up 26.4% from 2020, and was likely among the highest ever seen by any country. The surplus with the US rose 25.1% to USD 396.6 billion.
