The sole presiding Judge of the South Jakarta District Court, Haswandi, granted the pre-trial petition of the former Director General of Taxation Hadi Poernomo against the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). The judge ruled that the process by which Hadi Poernomo was named a graft suspect was unauthorized.

Legislative Update

The cold war between the Red-and-White opposition (KMP) and the Great Indonesia Coalition (KIH) at the House of Representatives (DPR) may have been the cause behind the DPR’s so-far disappointing legislative performance. Entering the seventh month of their service, The DPR have not managed to discuss a single Bill (RUU) with the government. Legislative function appears neglected. This is sad considering the goals set in National Legislation Program (Prolegnas) priorities for 2015. The DPR is supposed to pass 37 RUU this year.

The So-Called Constitutional Jihad

The group of people who believe that they’re conducting a constitutional jihad have filed two other request for judicial review to the Constitutional Court (MK) against Law No. 30/2009 on Electricity and Law No. 25/2007 on Foreign Investment (UU PMA). The group argues that both laws have the potential for allowing the private sector to seep into the management of natural resources, a situation that constitutes privatization and liberalization. And so the group concludes that both laws contradict the constitution, wherein it’s clear that the state has full sovereignty on the management of natural/key resources.

The Challenge of Reforming Indonesia’s Marine and Fisheries Sector

In March 2015 the Ministry of Marine and Fisheries (KKP) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (NKB) on the Joint Action Plan to Preserve Indonesia’s Natural Resources with 19 ministries, seven related state agencies, and the Governors (their representatives) of 34 provinces. With the MoU signed, the Ministry hoped to improve governance in the marine sector, and encourage compliance by way of harmonizing laws and regulations.

Aher, the Gedebage Stadium, & the T-Tower Project

The National Police’s Criminal Investigation Division (Bareskrim Polri) questioned West Java Governor Ahmad “Aher” Heryawan for almost 14 hours on Friday (May. 15). Bareskrim Polri is following up on their investigation into allegations of graft in the implementation of the Gelora Bandung Lautan Api (Gedebage) sports stadium construction project. This is the second graft case implicating the PKS politician. Aher was previously under the scrutiny of the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) for alleged graft in the purchase of 14 floors of the T-Tower by Bank Jabar Banten (BJBR). Aher is one of the names that the PKS have prepared as their 2019 presidential candidate.
