Residents interviewed by Tempo media group gave negative comments on the pairing of Prabowo Subianto and Gibran Rakabuming Raka, son of President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo. A survey from Litbang Kompas, research division of the country’s largest newspaper Kompas, also found vast majority of respondents classify the pairing as part of dynasty politics.

We are all wondering about the state of relationship between President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Megawati Soekarnoputri, the chairperson of the ruling party PDIP, following the nomination of the President’s eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, as the running mate of Prabowo Subianto. Let’s talk a bit about the matter and some implications that may come.

Prabowo Subianto and his supporting coalition have announced Gibran Rakabuming Raka, the eldest son of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, as running mate. Prabowo and Gibran will register themselves at the General Election Commission (KPU) on Wednesday (Oct. 25), the last day of the registration.

It is not final yet, but Golkar and the National Mandate Party (PAN) have sent out strong signals that Gibran Rakabuming, son of president Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo, who is mayor of Solo, will become running mate of Prabowo Subianto in next year’s election.

The latest survey from the Lembaga Survei Indonesia (LSI) found Prabowo Subianto to be leading the race no matter who the running mate will be. At the same time, the survey showed that Prabowo’s lead is not enough to seal a victory in one round, therefore he will likely face Ganjar Pranowo in the second round. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo will return to Jakarta tomorrow (Oct. 21) from his state visit in China and Saudi Arabia. The President’s return is worth highlighting because there are pending issues from the President that will affect the landscape of the 2024 race.

Prabowo Subianto, meanwhile, has yet to announce his running mate. We all wonder who will become Prabowo’s running mate: Erick Thohir, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, or someone else?

Looks like that PDIP and its coalition partners are confident enough that they can enter the 2024 presidential election without support from outgoing president and PDIP cadre Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo. At least that’s our impression from PDIP coalition’s announcement of Mahfud MD as the running mate for Ganjar Pranowo on Wednesday (Oct 18) while Jokowi was overseas.

We’re only hours before the General Election Commission (KPU) opens the registration of presidential and vice-presidential candidates for the 2024 presidential election. Megawati Soekarnoputri, the chairperson of the ruling party PDIP, will announce Ganjar Pranowo’s running mate today. Prabowo Subianto will likely follow suit and announce his running mate after Megawati’s announcement.
