The two strongest presidential candidates, Prabowo Subianto and Ganjar Pranowo, are intensifying the meeting of political parties within their respective coalition ahead of the Constitutional Court’s (MK) ruling on the age limit of presidential and vice-presidential candidates that will be read on Monday (Oct. 16). Prabowo’s coalition will hold a meeting tonight (Oct. 13) to discuss his running mate. Ganjar’s coalition, meanwhile, already held a meeting two days ago (Oct. 11).

The Next Army Chief

The Army Chief of Staff (KSAD), General Dudung Abdurachman, will enter his mandatory retirement age on Nov. 19, a week before the Military Commander (Panglima TNI) Admiral Yudo Margono ends his term. There has been a talk regarding a possibility that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo might accelerate the succession of the KSAD because whoever is appointed as the next KSAD will likely become Yudo’s successor. Therefore, we’re anticipating the succession of the KSAD that might happen earlier either this month or early next month.

The upcoming cabinet reshuffle is truly interesting to watch in light of the 2024 presidential race. Democratic Party, led by former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), is opening the door to the possibility in which President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo might offer the Party to join the cabinet and give a position to SBY’s eldest son and its party chairman, Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY).

Political Event to Watch: Projo’s Rakernas

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is scheduled to open the National Working Meeting (Rakernas) of Projo on Saturday (Oct. 14) at the Istora Senayan in Central Jakarta. Projo, which is one of President Jokowi’s largest volunteer groups, will announce the presidential and vice-presidential candidates they support in 2024 race in the Rakernas. The other faction of Projo, meanwhile, has earlier given its endorsement to Ganjar Pranowo.

Erick Thohir, the ‘ad interim’ Luhut

President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo has appointed Erick Thohir, minister of state-owned enterprises, as ad interim coordinating minister for maritime and investment affairs to fill a position left vacant because Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan has been hospitalized for quite sometime now.

Buruh Party

Buruh Party, led by Said Iqbal, is another political party that will compete in the 2024 elections. The Party will hold its presidential convention next week on Oct. 16 at the Kartika Chandra Hotel, Jakarta, in which the Party claims that Ganjar Pranowo (PDIP) has confirmed to attend the convention and to give a speech. Meanwhile, Prabowo Subianto (Gerindra), who is also invited to the convention, has yet to give a confirmation.

Anas Urbaningrum’s Party

Around 24 political parties will compete in the 2024 elections. These 24 parties consist of 18 parties that will compete nation-wide, and 6 local parties that will only compete in Aceh province. One of them is Partai Kebangkitan Nusantara (PKN) or Nusantara Awakening Party, a newly political party led by Anas Urbaningrum, ex-graft convict and former chairman of Democratic Party.

The Constitutional Court (MK) will convene October 16 to read its ruling related to lawsuits filed by some groups, including supporters of Gibran Rakabuming (Mayor of Solo, son of President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo). On the same day, Projo, one of the largest volunteer groups supporting Jokowi in 2014 and 2019 election, will also convene to make final decision on whom they will endorse in 2024 race.
