Opposition: Why It Matters
What’s happening today in Indonesian politics teaches us a great lesson on the importance of opposition. In this regard, we do expect that whoever loses the 2024 presidential election can take a role of the opposition to the next administration. However, will they be willing and able to do so?
2024 Race: Nepotism, Cronyism & Patron-Client
Most of pro-democracy and 1998 reform activists are focusing their resources and energy on strongly criticizing President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Prabowo-Gibran pairing for nepotism and politics dynasty issues, and one can understand why. At the same time, we should not forget to monitor the other candidates too.
Kalla, Anies & Neutrality Rhetorics
Former Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who is widely known as Anies Baswedan’s political mentor and patron figure, is not listed in the official campaign team of Anies-Muhaimin Iskandar. However, we all know Kalla is backing up Anies in the 2024 presidential race....
Cash-rich people & 2024 elections (5)
Vedi Hadiz, professor of Asian Studies and Director of Asia Institute at University of Melbourne, feels sorry for his colleagues in the civil society, who recently expressed their grievance on vulgar promotion of nepotism by President Joko ‘Jokowi’ Widodo. Hadiz said it’s naive for them to expect Jokowi would do differently because of how he came to power.
MK & Conflict of Interest Issue
The Constitutional Court (MK) holds a retrial on the age limit of presidential and vice presidential candidates following a new judicial review request filed at the Court. The request was submitted soon after the MK’s Ethics Council (MKMK) found ethics violation in the issuance of MK’s ruling No. 90/PUU-XXI/2023, which opened the way for President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s eldest son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, to enter 2024 presidential election as Prabowo Subianto’s running mate. The MK recently stated on Tuesday (Nov. 21) that Constitutional Justice Anwar Usman, who is former MK chief justice and President Jokowi’s brother-in-law, will not be involved in a retrial of the presidential age limit.

Another important question is, can the President and his Generals keep the Indonesian Military (TNI) neutral during the 2024 simultaneous presidential and legislative elections?
Puan’s Meeting with Jokowi
House Speaker Puan Maharani, who is also the daughter of PDIP Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri, met with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo at the State Palace Jakarta on Monday (Nov. 20). The meeting is truly worth highlighting because it was the first time Puan met with Jokowi after the polemics surrounding the Constitutional Court (MK) and the President’s son, Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who becomes the running mate of Prabowo Subianto, the strongest rival of PDIP’s presidential candidate Ganjar Pranowo.
Notes on Pollsters
LSI Denny JA found Prabowo Subianto-Gibran Rakabuming Raka extending their lead into almost 12 percent margin above Ganjar Pranowo-Mahfud MD. Meanwhile, another pollster, Indonesia Political Opinion (IPO), oddly found that Anies Baswedan-Muhaimin Iskandar overtook...
Ganjar’s Meeting with Kalla
Ganjar Pranowo, a presidential candidate from the ruling party PDIP, met with former Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who is former chairman of Golkar Party. The meeting is worth highlighting because Kalla is a political mentor of Anies Baswedan, another presidential candidate that will contest in the 2024 presidential race.
More Job Rotation in the Military
The Military Commander (Panglima TNI) Admiral Yudo Margono has instituted another job rotation. The rotation is truly worth highlighting because it is the third rotation Admiral Yudo instituted in the last three weeks ahead of the succession of Military Commander and the start of the campaign period of 2024 elections.
