Controversy on Sudden Increase of PSI’s Votes

The Coalition of Civil Society shares their concern on the sudden increase of votes from the Indonesian Solidarity Party (PSI), a small party led by President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s youngest son Kaesang Pangarep, in the real count conducted by the General Election Commission (KPU) in the last few days. Similar concerns are also shared by politicians from the other parties.

Megawati-Kalla Meeting

The fifth President Megawati Soekarnoputri, who is the matriarch of PDIP, reportedly will soon meet with former Vice President Jusuf Kalla, also known as a political mentor and patron figure of Anies Baswedan. Kalla, who is former chairman of Golkar Party, endorsed Anies in 2024 presidential election while Megawati and her PDIP supported Ganjar Pranowo.

The supporters of Anies Baswedan, a losing presidential candidate, start to promote Anies to run again in the Jakarta gubernatorial election that will be held this year on Nov. 27. They even try to pair Anies with his predecessor and ex-political rival, Basuki Tjahaja Purnama a.k.a Ahok. Let’s talk a bit about Anies’ chance in the Jakarta’s 2024 gubernatorial election.

Sandiaga’s Signal

Sandiaga Uno, who is now a politician from the Islamic United Development Party (PPP), sent a signal that he might regroup with Prabowo Subianto and PPP might jump ship into a coalition endorsing the retired General in 2024 race. This shouldn’t be a surprise. Sandi left Gerindra, Prabowo’s political party, to join PPP last year on June 2023.

Jokowi to Join Golkar?

There has been a rumor that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo might join Golkar, the second largest political party in Indonesia. Jokowi, who never said he left the ruling party PDIP, didn’t confirm or deny the rumor, which adds more speculation that it might be true. Jokowi’s decisions prior to and after the election clearly suggested he has left PDIP. Still, let’s talk a bit about the matter due to its future political implications.

Four months ago, we have talked about the possibility of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo awarding Minister of Defense Prabowo Subianto an honorary four-star rank general. Today, on Feb. 28, the President is indeed scheduled to bestow an honorary four-star rank general on Prabowo.

Central Java’s 2024 Gubernatorial Election

Central Java, the third largest province in Indonesia, will hold its gubernatorial election this year simultaneously with the other provinces on Nov. 27. The gubernatorial election in Central Java is truly interesting to watch because the tension is believed to be quite high there after a devastating defeat of Ganjar Pranowo, former Central Java governor and a presidential candidate from the ruling party PDIP, to Prabowo-Gibran in the 2024 presidential race in the province.

Jakarta’s 2024 Gubernatorial Election

We’re still nine months away from the 2024 simultaneous regional elections scheduled to be held on Nov. 27, but the tension is already heating up between potential candidates that will run, especially in the Jakarta gubernatorial election. Among them are Ahmad Sahroni, the treasurer of Nasdem, a political party led by media mogul Surya Paloh, and Ridwan Kamil, former governor of West Java and now a deputy chairman of Golkar Party.

Prabowo-Gibran Meeting

DPR’s Right of Inquiry: Impeachment Attempt?

Ganjar Pranowo, a losing candidate from the ruling party PDIP, continues to encourage political parties in pushing the House of Representatives (DPR) to use its right of inquiry (Hak Angket) to investigate election fraud allegations. Many wonder whether this maneuver is an attempt to impeach President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.
