Pretty much as predicted, the selection of the new leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) has given the opportunity to both those in power and those in the opposition to put their guys at the helm of the Agency for the next period of 2024-2029. In the previous article, we’ve mentioned two candidates: Sudirman Said, who is known close to Jusuf Kalla and Anies Baswedan, and Ike Edwin, a retired two-star police general and now a politician from Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono’s (SBY) Democratic Party. In this article, let’s talk about some other candidates worth highlighting for their political connections.
Opposition, any one?
Pretty much as predicted, the Islamic party PKS is also hoping to join Prabowo Subianto’s administration. This development is not good for the future of the opposition, and we may as well forget the idea of strengthening the opposition.
Will Imin Run in Gubernatorial Race?
Many interesting things happen in the anniversary event of PKB, held on Tuesday (Jul. 23) night at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) in Senayan, Central Jakarta. Other than the confession from PKS that the Party wishes to join Prabowo Subianto’s administration, the Acting Chairman of PPP Mardiono also made an interesting statement during the event. Mardiono hopes that Muhaimin Iskandar, the chairman of PKB, is willing to run in the gubernatorial election this year. Both PPP and PKB are the two Islamic parties strongly affiliated to the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia.
PKB’s State of Relationship with Jokowi-Prabowo
Today, Jul. 23, the National Awakening Party (PKB), the largest Islamic party led by Muhaimin Iskandar (former running mate of Anies Baswedan in the 2024 presidential race), will hold its anniversary event at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) in Senayan, Central Jakarta. However, the outgoing President Jokowi and President-elect Prabowo Subianto won’t attend the anniversary event. This might help us understand the state of relationship between PKB, especially Muhaimin, and Jokowi-Prabowo.
Jokowi’s Papua Visit
The outgoing President Jokowi is in a working visit in Papua. The visit is worth highlighting with the presence of Budi Gunawan, the chief of the State Intelligence Agency (BIN), accompanying the President. This is, perhaps, the first time we’ve seen Budi Gunawan accompanying Jokowi in the latter’s visit in the last 16 months.
Central Java Election: Another Fight between PDIP & Jokowi
Other than North Sumatera, it looks like we may see another duel between PDIP and the outgoing President Jokowi in Central Java gubernatorial election this year. Jokowi’s youngest son, Kaesang Pangarep, will likely run in the Central Java race to challenge those from PDIP.
East Java Election: Khofifah vs Risma (4)
Two survey results released by Litbang Kompas and Proximity showed that Khofifah Indar Parawansa is still leading the poll in East Java, with Tri Rismaharini trailing behind the incumbent. Will we see Khofifah compete head-to-head against Risma in this year’s gubernatorial election in East Java?

Mini Cabinet Reshuffle: Growing danger of nepotism

Former Vice President (VP) Jusuf Kalla expressed his endorsement for Sudirman Said in the selection of the new leaders of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) for 2024-2029 period. Sudirman, former Minister of Energy & Mineral Resources (ESDM), has been registered as one among 318 candidates for becoming the new leaders of KPK.
