Understanding the Latest Electability Figures
Indikator Politik Indonesia, Charta Politika, and Median have released the result of their respective electability survey this month. The first two pollsters confirmed the findings of previous surveys—President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is leading the race by a significant margin. Median, on the other hand, has found that the margin separating the electability of Prabowo Subianto and his running mate Sandiaga Uno (Prabowo-Sandi) from the electability from Jokowi and his running mate K.H. Ma’ruf Amin (Jokowi-Amin) to have narrowed to less than 10%.
Abu Bakar Ba’asyir’s Release Plan
This week, the Government will release Abu Bakar Ba’asyir, the Mubaligh or Carer of the Al-Mukmin Islamic Boarding School (Pondok Pesantren Al-Mukmin) in Ngruki, Sukoharjo, Central Java. Ba’asyir, who turned 81 years old this year, was convicted in a case of terrorism back in 2011. His planned released has caused much of a stir. The majority of the conversations in the social media platform on this topic were that of disappointment. The legal basis for this release came under question. That Ba’asyir had refused to sign a pledge of loyalty to the State (Negara Kesatuan Republik Indonesia) and the State philosophy Pancasila was also discussed.
New PSSI Leadership, Business & Politics
The Governor of North Sumatera Lt. Gen. Edy Rahmayadi stepped down from his position of chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI) in the annual congress that the PSSI held in Bali over the weekend. The congress elected Joko Driyono, Edy’s second-in-command, as the acting chairman of PSSI.
Ma’ruf Amin & Banten-West Java Battlegrounds
K.H. Ma’ruf Amin, the running mate of presidential candidate Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, has been moving forward with his campaign into Banten and West Java, the two provinces that Jokowi lost to Prabowo in the 2014 presidential election.
Jokowi & His Retail Politics
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo went to West Java after attending the first presidential debate. He visited the Garut regency, wherein he officiated the free installation of electricity for 30,937 poor families and kicked off the groundbreaking of the construction of subsidized houses for the members of the so-called Garut Barbers Brotherhood (PPRG).
Kalla: Present & Future
Jusuf Kalla will soon end his term as the Vice President (VP) of the Republic. He is no longer President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s running mate. He’s only the chief adviser of the President’s national campaign team (TKN). With such dramatic changes, some wonder whether Kalla still has significant influence in this year’s presidential race. Others wonder what future waits for him after the election.
The First Debate
The first debate of the 2019 presidential election is over. Each camp, of course, claimed they’ve won the debate, but that’s not what we’re going to discuss. Let’s go over the highlights.
Amien Rais’ Rhetorics & Political Blunder
Amien Rais, the founder of PAN and the chief adviser of the national campaign team of the presidential pair Prabowo Subianto and Sandiaga Uno (Prabowo-Sandi) again attacked the incumbent President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo. Amien told attendees (Jan. 15) of the discussion held at the Prabowo-Sandi campaign office that Jokowi’s regime was an authoritarian regime.
Prabowo-Sandi & Infrastructure Narrative
In the speech he gave at the Jakarta Convention Center (JCC) on Tuesday (Jan. 14, Prabowo Subianto mentioned his promises related to infrastructure development. Sandi did the same back in December 2018. Though the kinds of infrastructure that the pair intend to build remain unclear, Prabowo-Sandi have at least made it possible to debate ideas.
Golhut or Golput?
A group of civil society organizations comprised of, among others, EcoNusa, Madani, HuMa, and WALHI—the heavyweights in environmental affairs—banded together and launched a digital campaign dubbed Golongan Hutan (Golhut). The campaign is aimed at millennials with the goal of getting them to engage with aspiring lawmakers, asking and demanding clarity on forestry policies. Everything from the tone of their content to their graphical representation demonstrates their clear intention to speak to the younger generations. It’s a well-conceived campaign in terms of production, but does it have any real potential of influencing political discourse?
