PDIP & Recent Dynamics in the Regions
The Governor of Riau Island Nurdin Basirun, as we’ve reported before, was arrested in a sting operation (OTT) conducted by the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). He’s been named a suspect. This could be a blessing in disguise for the ruling party PDIP as the Vice Governor of Riau Islands Isdianto, who is a PDIP politician, will take over the leadership in the province with the 2020 gubernatorial election already on the horizon. In the meantime, in South Sulawesi, Governor Nurdin Abdullah, who is also endorsed by PDIP, is facing political motion from his opponents in the provincial legislative council (DPRD).
Jokowi & the Next Attorney General
President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has begun arranging the lineup of his next cabinet with members of his ruling coalition and trusted figures in his inner circle. One of the most awaited decisions is Jokowi’s choice for the next attorney general (AG) to replace M. Prasetyo. Two possible names have come to our mind.
Jokowi-Prabowo Meeting
Jokowi has finally met Prabowo at Lebak Bulus MRT station Saturday (July 13) morning. This basically ends months of competition, which absorbed the nation’s energy. It was an informal, yet very important meeting, which could hopefully ease tensions between their supporters at the grass-root level.
KPK Leadership Selection Update
The committee tasked with selecting the candidates of the 2019-2023 Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) leaders has completed the administrative verification of the candidates. The committee eliminated 184 of the 376 applicants, including the only candidate from the military. So, there are 192 candidates left, including the three incumbent candidates who will go through the next stage of the selection process.
Golkar Chairmanship: Airlangga vs Bamsoet
Airlangga Hartarto’s camp are optimistic that it would maintain the leadership of the Golkar Party. Indeed, there are reasons to believe Airlangga can win his reelection in the upcoming Golkar chairmanship congress (Munas). That said, it would be better for Airlangga not to underestimate his rival Bambang Soesatyo a.k.a Bamsoet. Like Airlangga, Bamsoet also has an extensive network of financiers.
Prabowo’s Latest Maneuver
The losing presidential candidate Prabowo Subianto and his running mate Sandiaga Uno filed a lawsuit to the Supreme Court (MA) on election violation allegedly committed by the elected President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and his running mate KH Ma’ruf Amin. It’s not clear why they decided to do so when the public expects the rivalry to end and the reconciliation to begin. What are they looking for?
People on the Move
The House of Representatives (DPR) is expected to decide on whether to approve the nomination of Destry Damayanti as the new Senior Deputy Governor (DGS) of Bank Indonesia (BI) today. In the meantime, the DPR has on Wednesday elected the 2019-2022 commissioners of the Indonesian Broadcasting Commission (KPI).
Ganjar & Khofifah
The Governor of Central Java Ganjar Pranowo (PDIP) and the Governor of East Java Khofifah Indar Parawansa (PKB) met with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo separately on Tuesday (July 9) at the Bogor Presidential Palace to discuss the acceleration of development in their respective provinces.
