Ma’ruf Amin & His Inner Circle (2)

Muhammad Rapsel Ali, the son-in-law of the elected Vice President KH Ma’ruf Amin, is under the spotlight following the General Election Commission (KPU)’s decision to not include his name in the list of 575 new lawmakers of the House of Representatives (DPR) for the 2019-2024 period—they will be sworn in on October 1, 2019. Rapsel, according to the KPU, did not submit his State Official Wealth Report (LHKPN) to the KPU.

Power Sharing in the MPR & Amendment of the Constitution

All political parties in the House of Representatives (DPR) have on Thursday (Sep 5) agreed to revise the Legislative Institution Law No. 2/2018 (or known as the MD3 Law) to accommodate the request for 10 seats in the leadership of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR). Is this the price for a consensus on the plan to amend the 1945 Constitution?

The Real Jokowi (2)

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has forwarded the list of ten candidates of new leaders of the 2019-2023 Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) to the House of Representatives (DPR). The President didn’t give any note or correction the list that his selection committee made. He fully trust them despite the criticisms of watchdog groups and KPK supporters. This could be an example of how we’d see a different Jokowi in his second term: a Jokowi that has nothing to lose.

The Race to Control Golkar (5)

The supporters of Golkar chairman candidate Bambang Soesatyo (Bamsoet) held a meeting at the Sultan Hotel Jakarta. They expressed their disappointment in their Chairman Airlangga Hartarto, who didn’t let them use the Party’s headquarters. They urged Airlangga to soon hold the Golkar’s plenary meeting to evaluate the Party’s performance in the 2019 legislative election. Airlangga’s supporters, however, defended him by saying there was a reason for not granting the use of the HQ. They said the Party, under Airlangga’s leadership, indeed would hold a 5-day meeting starting tomorrow (Sep. 6).

The New Capital: the Opposition & Property Giants

Another hot topic in town is President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s decision to move the capital city of Indonesia to an area in the neighboring regencies of Penajam Paser Utara and Kutai Kartanegara in the resource-rich province of East Kalimantan. Interestingly, the opposition launched a movement criticizing Jokowi’s decision by capitalizing a part of the public that disagrees with the plan.

Making the KPK Less Political

Today, Sep. 2, the Committee tasked with selecting the new leaders of the 2019-2023 Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is expected to submit the list of ten candidates to President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo. That said, watchdog groups and observers have shared their pessimism. They’re responding to the decision of the Committee to pass the candidates from the Police and the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) into the final stage.
