The former Governor of Jakarta Basuki Tjahaja Purnama a.k.a Ahok has twice said that his political career is over. The Golkar Party, the second largest political party in the country, has officially nominated Bambang Soesatyo (Bamsoet) to become speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR). Golkar previously nominated Aziz Syamsuddin as deputy speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), and Aziz was sworn in last night (Oct. 1). Is this a deal in exchange for lending Airlangga their support in Golkar’s upcoming chairmanship congress (Munas)?

Jokowi’s Latest Meetings & Security Issues

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has on Monday (Sep 30) held a closed meeting with the leaders of the two workers unions, and with musicians at the Bogor Presidential Palace. The President has also held a meeting with the Commander of the Military (TNI) Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto, and the Chief of the National Police (POLRI) General Tito Karnavian to discuss the ongoing student rally and other security issues.

The New Legislative

Today (Oct. 1), 575 new lawmakers of the House of Representatives (DPR) for the period of 2019-2024 are to be sworn in along with the 136 members of the Regional Representatives Council (DPD). As scheduled the new speakership of both the DPR and DPD will also be announced. The inauguration will begin at 10 a.m. at the Parliament complex. The National Police has deployed around 20,000 personnel, while the Military (TNI) has deployed 6,000 soldiers to guard the inauguration.

The Fight for the Speakership of the MPR

Unlike the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives (DPR), the race for the position of Speaker of the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR) is still wide open. At least four political parties are reportedly seeking the position. Who will win the race?

The Race to Control Golkar (7)

The Chairman of Golkar Party Airlangga Hartarto and his rival Bambang Soesatyo (Bamsoet) agreed to ease down the tension in the Party responding to recent situation in national politics. They said they’re aware of what the dynamics in Golkar could do to the political situation in the country. Some, however, wonder whether there’s a deal, especially about power sharing, behind their decision to reconcile.

Hypocrisy of the Opposition

The opposition party PKS has joined the chorus askingPresident Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to issue a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) to cancel and replace the newly revised Law of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). The Party also stated that they’d provide legal aid for those challenging the revised KPK Law to the Constitutional Court (MK). PKS’ ally Gerindra, the biggest opposition party led by Prabowo Subianto, also made a similar statement.

Jokowi & the Revised KPK Law

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo met with a number of civil society figures at the State Palace Jakarta on Thursday (Sep. 26). In the said meeting, the President was asked to issue a government regulation in lieu of law (Perppu) to cancel the revised Law on the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK). Will Jokowi follow up on the suggestion?
