Jokowi’s Sons on the Move

Bobby Afif Nasution, the son-in-law of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, met with the Chairman of Gerindra Party Prabowo Subianto to discuss the former’s plan to run for mayor in the 2020 Medan Municipality election. Separately, Jokowi’s eldest son Gibran Rakabuming Raka, who is also seeking to run for mayor in the 2020 Surakarta election, is working towards expanding his grassroot reach.

2020 Political Outlook (5): Makassar Mayoral Race

Munafri Arifuddin, the nephew of former VP Jusuf Kalla, will try his luck once more in the 2020 Makassar Municipality election. Munafri is the son-in-law of businessman-cum-politician Aksa Mahmud. He ran in the 2018 Makassar Municipality election with his running mate Rachmatika Dewi Yustitia Iqbal, but failed. 

2020 Political Outlook (4): Tangsel Election

Next year, Tangerang Selatan (Tangsel) will also host its election. Siti Nur Azizah, the daughter of VP Ma’ruf Amin is planning to run for mayor in the 2020 Tangsel Municipality election. The 2020 Tangsel election is an open race for the current Mayor Airin Rachmi Diany has served for two terms and thus cannot run for a third.

The New Vice Chief of the Presidential Staff Office

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has decided to establish a new position in the Presidential Staff Office (KSP). The Chief of the KSP Military Commander General (ret) Moeldoko will be assisted by a vice chief. The former Cabinet Secretary Andi Widjajanto is rumored to be a candidate for the said position. 

2020 Political Outlook (3): Regional Elections to Watch

The country will hold another simultaneous regional elections next year on Sep. 23, 2020, with 270 regions participating (gubernatorial election in 9 provinces, regent election in 224 regencies, and mayoral election in 37 municipalities). The mayoral election of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s hometown Surakarta (Central Java) and the mayoral election in Medan (North Sumatera) are important to monitor because of the participation of the President’s sons.

After a relatively slow start, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is likely to demand from his cabinet members in 2020. Beyond his usual push for infrastructure development, and the expected attention on the establishment of Indonesia’s future capital city in East Kalimantan, the President is also paying a lot of attention to the oil and gas sector. The President even repeatedly expressed his anger over the oil and gas mafia for putting pressure on Indonesia’s balance sheet.

Police Job Rotation: Regeneration Agenda Continues

Apart from making Gatot Eddy Pramono the new Deputy Chief of the National Police (Wakapolri), the Police Chief (Kapolri) General Idham Azis also continued his regeneration agenda at the National Police Detective Division (Bareskrim POLRI) and at the leadership of police offices in the regencies/municipalities.

As predicted, the Chief of the National Police (Kapolri) General Idham Azis made Gatot Eddy Pramono as the new Police deputy chief (Wakapolri). Gatot replaced Comr. Gen. Ari Dono Sukmanto, who has just entered his mandatory retirement. With Gatot’s appointment, Idham Azis’s Police Force is now complete.

The KPK Supervisory Team: What’s Next?

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has taken the oath of the members of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) Supervisory Team. They were inaugurated together with the new leaders of the 2019-2023 KPK in a ceremony held at the State Palace, Jakarta last Friday (Dec. 20). Fortunately for President KPK officials, former KPK leaders, and civil society figures all praised his Supervisory Team selection. The question is whether the supervisory team will perform well.
