Jokowi’s Political Accommodation

KAMI & the Anti-Omnibus Law Riots

The National Police’s Criminal Investigation Division (Bareskrim POLRI) has named nine members of the so-called Coalition to Save Indonesia (KAMI) as suspects related to the recent riots occurring in the rallies protesting the new Omnibus Law on Job Creation (Cipta Kerja). The said nine members of KAMI, including its three leaders, were accused of spreading hoax, hate speech, and inciting the riots. Some shocking facts were revealed by the Bareskrim regarding the conversations made among the suspects related to the rally. KAMI is the new opposition group led by the former Military (TNI) Commander General (ret) Gatot Nurmantyo and the former Chairman of PP Muhammadiyah Din Syamsuddin.

Prabowo’s US Visit

Today, Oct. 16, the Minister of Defense Lt. Gen. (ret) Prabowo Subianto starts his itinerary in the United States (US). Prabowo, who is also the chairman of Gerindra Party, is expected to meet top US officials in the Pentagon today.

Islam Politics & Anti-Omnibus Law Rally

The Oct. 13 rally protesting the new Omnibus Law on Job Creation (Cipta Kerja) was organized hardline Muslim groups associated in the so-called the Anti-Communist National Alliance (Aliansi Nasional Anti Komunis or Anak NKRI). It turned into a riot. Afterwhich the Police raided the headquarters of the Indonesian Islamic Students (PII)-the Indonesian Islamic Youth Movement (GPII) in Menteng 58, Central Jakarta. The Police arrested some members of the said organizations.

Anti-Omnibus Law Rally & Health-Security Concern

Today, Oct. 15, the workers associated with the Gerakan Buruh Jakarta or the Jakarta Workers Movement (GBJ) are to stage a rally near the State Palace Jakarta to protest against the new Omnibus Law on Job Creation (Cipta Kerja). There’s a security concern as the rallies continue, and the previous ones turned into riots. There’s also a health concern with the rallies potentially widening the spread of COVID-19.

The Police Chief Extension & Stability Factor

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo pays particular attention to political stability. Since the spread of COVID-19 has put Indonesia in a particularly vulnerable position, the President, out of consideration for the stability of politics and security, might choose to keep Air Chief Marshal Hadi Tjahjanto as the Military (TNI) Commander. In that case, the President might also decide to extend the term of the Chief of the National Police (Kapolri) General Idham Azis for at least another year.
