Jokowi & Third-Term Speculation
Amien Rais, one of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s biggest critics, made some accusations against the President. Andi Alfian Mallarangeng, the closest aide of former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), stated that the move of Moeldoko to overthrow SBY’s son Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY) through the extraordinary congress (KLB) of Democratic Party is beyond Moeldoko’s political ambition. Andi, who is now the secretary of the Democratic Party’s Highest Council, speculated that Moeldoko’s maneuver is related to the amendment of the 1945 Constitution.
Rizieq’s Trials
The District Court (PN) of East Jakarta is to kick off the trial of cases involving Rizieq Shihab, the supreme leader of the disbanded hardline muslim group FPI, next week. The Democratic Party led by former Commander of the Indonesian Military (TNI), who is now the chief of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP), has submitted its management structure as per the results of the Party’s extraordinary congress (KLB) to the Ministry of Law & Human Rights. Moeldoko’s faction is seeking official recognition and legalization from the Government. The other faction led by Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), the eldest son of former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), submitted pieces of evidence to the Law & Human Rights Ministry in an attempt to prove that Moeldoko’s KLB was illegal.
KPK’s Investigation on Anies’ Project: Political Implications?
The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) is investigating the corruption allegation in the purchase of land in Cipayung, East Jakarta. A regional firm (BUMD) owned by the Jakarta Administration made the purchase. The KPK has not yet revealed details of the case, but the media report notes that the case is related to the city’s zero rupiah down payment home ownership project, one of Jakarta Governor Anies Baswedan’s signature projects.
When Golkar Opposes Kalla
The Chairman of the Golkar Party Airlangga Hartarto firmly stated that his party had rejected the revision of the Election Law (UU Pemilu) No. 7/2017. The Party wants to maintain the schedule of the next simultaneous regional elections remaining in 2024. Airlangga, who is also the coordinating minister for economy, delivered the statement in Golkar’s national leadership meeting (Rapimnas). Airlangga’s statement is a stark contrast to the statement of former Vice President Jusuf Kalla, who is also a former Golkar chairman.
