The Sunken Submarine & Military Procurement
The sunken Nanggala-402 submarine was found 838 metres below the surface of the Bali waters. The Indonesian Navy (TNI AL) is now in talks with the International Submarine Escape and Rescue Liaison Office (ISMERLO) to raise the sunken submarine from the seafloor and to recover the remains of the 53 crews on board.
Cabinet Reshuffle: A Sign From Jokowi?
The upcoming cabinet reshuffle was rumored to happen last week on April 21, but nothing happened. Some believe that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo has not reached a comfortable arrangement with his backers, while others note the possibility of a large overhaul of the cabinet. On that note, Minister of State Secretary Pratikno, who is known as one of Jokowi’s closest aides, had said that the President would not announce a reshuffle in the near future.
Nadiem & Cabinet Reshuffle
Two days after meeting with the fifth President Megawati Soekarnoputri, who is also the chairperson of the ruling party PDIP, the Minister of Education & Culture Nadiem Makarim visited the headquarters of the Nahdlatul Ulama (PBNU) on Thursday (April 22). PBNU, the largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, is Nadiem’s biggest supporter. Recently, it expressed support for Nadiem to remain in his position in the cabinet.

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo ordered the Military Commander, the Navy Chief of Staff (KSAL), the National Search & Rescue Agency (Basarnas), and all related parties to find the missing Nanggala-402 submarine and rescue the 53 people on board. The clock is ticking because the oxygen supply in the submarine would supposedly last until the early hours of Saturday (April 24).

The Nanggala-402 submarine with 53 people on board is missing. The vessel lost contact on Wednesday (April 21) in the northern waters of Bali as it began its torpedo exercise. The Nanggala-402, a German-made submarine, is one of five submarines owned by the Indonesian Navy (TNI AL).

In the midst of rumors that he might be kicked out from the cabinet, the Minister of Education & Culture Nadiem Makarim met with the Fifth President Megawati Soekarnoputri on Tuesday (April 20). Nadiem posted a photograph of him and the Chairperson of the ruling party PDIP on his personal Instagram account. Many see that as Nadiem saying he has a powerful political backing to remain in the cabinet.

The State Palace issued a statement denying the rumor that President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo would announce a new cabinet line-up today (April 21). The question now is whether or not changing the cabinet line-up is necessary if it is only meant for political compromise.
Democratic Party & the Upcoming Cabinet Reshuffle
In the midst of cabinet reshuffle rumors, the Democratic Party led by Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), the eldest son of former President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), stated that the Party would remain outside of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo administration. The Head of Democratic Party’s Strategic Communication Body Herzaky Mahendra Putra said that his party would continue to watch the Government for the sake of check and balance.
