Muhammadiyah Chairmanship Race: The Candidates?

It’s only two weeks left before Muhammadiyah, the second largest Islamic organization in Indonesia, opens its three-day Muktamar (chairmanship congress) on Nov. 18 in Solo, Central Java. We all wonder why Muhammadiyah has not yet released the list of 93 candidates that will compete in the chairmanship race.

The Hardliners on the Move Again

Today, Nov 4, the hardline muslim groups that are associated with Rizieq Shihab plan to stage a rally demanding President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo to step down. It’s worth noting that said groups are the similar groups behind 212 movement or the anti-Ahok movement six years ago.

Awaiting Jokowi’s Decision on Military Commander

Apparently, some people are still supporting the idea of term extension for Military Commander (Panglima TNI) General Andika Perkasa, who has a month left on active duty before entering his mandatory retirement age. The decision is in the hands of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, so we shall see whether the President appoints a new military commander or extends Andika’s term instead.

Prabowo Subianto won the majority of votes in the so-called Musyawarah Rakyat (Musra), a presidential convention held by the volunteer groups of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, in Palembang, South Sumatera. Trailing behind him was Ganjar Pranowo with a razor-thin margin.

Ganjar Pranowo warned his supporters to keep the situation conducive ahead of the 2024 political year. The Governor doesn’t want his supporters to create frictions between him and his own political party, PDIP, as well as between President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and PDIP.

Prabowo-Imin: No Deal Yet

Prabowo Subianto and Muhaimin Iskandar recently appeared together in an event held in Senayan, Central Jakarta by PKB, an Islamic party strongly affiliated with the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU). Military Succession & Andika’s Future

The House of Representatives (DPR) confirmed that they have not yet received a presidential letter (Surpres) from President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo regarding the change of the Military Commander (Panglima TNI). The current Military Commander, General Andika Perkasa, only has a month left before entering his mandatory retirement age. The question is not just about who will become Andika’s successor, but also about the future of the General once his term ends because his name has been mentioned as potential candidate for 2024 race.

Connecting the Dots: Ganjar-Ridwan?

KIB, a coalition of Golkar Party with PAN and PPP, will hold a meeting in Makassar, South Sulawesi this weekend on Nov. 6, 2022. The upcoming meeting is worth highlighting because the three political parties will discuss about presidential and vice-presidential candidates from the coalition. PAN, a political party led by Zulkifli Hasan, will likely propose Ganjar Pranowo-Ridwan Kamil pairing in the meeting.

PDIP on Jokowi-Megawati

The relationship between President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and Megawati Soekarnoputri has always been a subject of speculation ahead of 2024 race. In that regard, Secretary General of the ruling party PDIP, Hasto Kristiyanto, recently made an interesting statement. Hasto stated that Megawati and President Jokowi will have an intensive meeting before PDIP announces its presidential candidate.

New Ammunitions for PDIP

Six retired generals have joined the ruling party PDIP. One of them is Lt. Gen. (ret) Ganip Warsito, former chief of staff of the Indonesian Military (Kasum TNI) and former head of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB).
