Apart from the registration of candidates for the 2024 simultaneous presidential and legislative elections, another concern next year will be on the regional heads as well. As you may know, about 170 regional heads, including 18 governors, will end their term in 2023. President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo will therefore have the opportunity to appoint acting regional heads for those regions. It is a massive opportunity for the President.
2023 Political Outlook
It’s no doubt that all eyes will be on the registration of presidential and vice presidential candidates next year. The General Election Commission (KPU), as we all know, is scheduled to open the registration on Oct. 19, 2023. Who will get a ticket to enter the 2024 presidential election? How many pairs will register and compete in the race? We’ll find out the answers next year.

Jokowi-Paloh’s State of Relationship (2)
Tomorrow, on Dec. 10, the youngest son of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, Kaesang Pangarep, will tie the knot with Erina Sofia Gudono. However, media mogul Surya Paloh, who is also the chairman of Nasdem Party, will not attend the wedding. Paloh’s absence is worth highlighting because it tells us about the current state of his relationship with the President.
The Army Chief’s Latest Statement
The latest statement from the Army Chief of Staff (KSAD), General Dudung Abdurachman, is quite interesting to be highlighted. The General addressed a circulating rumor regarding the replacement of the three military chiefs and another rumor of him becoming the new chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI).
Security Issues
The Coordinating Minister for Politics, Law & Security Affairs Mahfud MD asks the National Police’s Counter-Terrorism Special Detachment (Densus 88) to tighten the security following a suicide bombing at the Astananyar police precinct (Polsek) in Bandung, West Java on Wednesday (Dec 7). The suicide bombing killed the perpetrator, one police officer, and injured some other officers.
PAN’s New Ammunitions
Ten retired army generals are officially joining the National Mandate Party (PAN), a member of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s ruling coalition. It’s worth highlighting because it’s a new thing for PAN, which is strongly affiliated to the Muhammadiyah, the second largest Islamic organization in Indonesia.
The 2024 Race Dynamics (14)
Gerindra, a political party led by Prabowo Subianto, asked its long-time political ally, PKS, to regroup for 2024 race. PKS, however, asked Gerindra to join a coalition with Nasdem and Democratic Party instead. Nasdem, a political party led by media mogul Surya Paloh, also asked Prabowo not to run again in 2024 and nominate his cadre as Anies Baswedan’s running mate.
Erick Thohir to Lead PSSI?
Erick Thohir, the minister of state-owned enterprises (SOEs), has been mentioned as the frontrunner to become the new chairman of the Indonesian Football Association (PSSI). PSSI, as we’ve reported before, will soon hold its extraordinary congress (KLB) to elect the new chairman. This development is worth highlighting in light of 2024 race.

Ganjar Pranowo and Erick Thohir were present in a recent event held by the National Mandate Party (PAN) in Central Java. Both of them were invited by the Chairman of PAN, Zulkifli Hasan, who expressed his support to endorse Ganjar as presidential candidate in 2024 race.
