General Moeldoko vs Major Agus: The End

The leadership dispute within the Democratic Party has ended following the Supreme Court’s (MA) ruling that rejected a case review filed by former Military Commander (Panglima TNI) General (ret) Moeldoko, who is now the chief of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP). With the ruling, the Democratic Party will remain to be led by Major (ret) Agus Harimurti Yudhoyono (AHY), the eldest son of the sixth President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). What’s next for AHY and Moeldoko?

The ruling party PDIP, as we all know, has secured the additional endorsement for its presidential candidate, Ganjar Pranowo, from some small political parties. However, one starts to wonder whether PDIP can maintain the current members of its coalition or even expand the size of the coalition, considering the recent political dynamics?

Ganjar & Gibran

While President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo met with Prabowo Subianto at the State Palace Jakarta on Tuesday (Aug 8), the President’s eldest son Gibran Rakabuming Raka accompanied Ganjar Pranowo during a working visit in Solo, Central Java on the same day. Both Prabowo and Ganjar are the two strongest presidential candidates based on various polls. Gibran, meanwhile, has been tipped as a potential vice-presidential candidate.

Another Jokowi-Prabowo Meeting

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo held another meeting with the Chairman of Gerindra Party Prabowo Subianto, who is also the minister of defense, at the State Palace Jakarta on Tuesday (Aug 8). This is Jokowi-Prabowo’s seventh meeting in the last three months.

Puan-Jokowi Meeting

The House Speaker Puan Maharani, who is also the daughter of PDIP Chairperson Megawati Soekarnoputri, held a meeting with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo at the State Palace Jakarta on Monday (Aug 7). The meeting happened after Puan accompanied the President in welcoming the visit of the parliamentary leaders from South East Asian (ASEAN) countries.

Khofifah & 2024 Race (2)

The popular Governor of East Java Khofifah Indar Parawansa stated that she cannot make a decision yet in regard to the next year’s presidential election because she’s waiting for a green light from the Nahdlatul Ulama’s central board (PBNU). Khofifah’s statement is truly worth highlighting because she has been considered by all of the top three presidential hopefuls as potential running mate.

PDIP on Presidential Age Limit

The Secretary General of the ruling party PDIP, Hasto Kristiyanto, gave his comment on the ongoing judicial review at the Constitutional Court (MK) that aims to change the age limit of presidential and vice-presidential candidates. Hasto called the judicial review requests as maneuver and hoped that the MK will maintain the current law and regulation regarding the presidential age limit.

Military Commander Succession & 2024 Race

President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo gave a brief statement regarding the succession of the Military Commander (Panglima TNI) and Army Chief of Staff (KSAD), in which the President indicated that he won’t accelerate the succession. In the meantime, the ruling party PDIP mentioned that Lt. Gen. Suharyanto, the chief of the National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) has more potential to become the KSAD compared to his two juniors, Lt. Gen. Maruli Simanjuntak and Lt. Gen. Agus Subiyanto.

2024 Race Dynamics (31)

The popular West Java Governor Ridwan Kamil and the Minister of State-Owned Enterprises (SOEs) Erick Thohir accompanied President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo when the President tried the new Greater Jakarta Light Rail Transit (LRT) on Thursday (Aug 3). Both Ridwan and Erick have been tipped as potential vice presidential candidates for the next year’s election.
