Telecommunications industry players in Indonesia do not want to be lulled by the gap in Starlink service rates which are currently higher than local internet service providers. Even though the business threat is relatively small, the potential for predatory pricing cannot be ignored.

This concern was conveyed by the Secretary General (Sekjen) of the Indonesian Telecommunications Providers Association (ATSI), Marwan O. Baasir. Based on ATSI’s presentation, Starlink currently offers 3 types of subscription rates, namely, services at a rate of Rp750,000/month for residential, Rp990,000/month for regional roaming, and Rp4.3 million/month for global roaming services.

This tariff is more expensive than fixed broadband with subscription rates ranging from Rp300,000/month for a speed of 50 Mbps, as well as mobile cellular which is much cheaper at Rp7,000/GB. In terms of device costs, customers must pay Rp7.8 million to get Starlink services. On the other hand, fixed broadband does not charge device fees, whereas mobile broadband adapts to customer needs.
