Shanghai steel futures continued to trade under 5,000 yuan a ton at the end of June, well below a record high of 5,975 yuan hit on May 11th, due to China’s efforts to limit soaring commodity prices and as demand is weakening. China’s top economic planning agency said this month it would probe malicious speculation. Also, the off-peak season has gradually arrived, and consumption is set to decline significantly.
