Indonesia spent over 600 billion rupiahs in 2020 for the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines. This year, the budget for the said procurement is 18 trillion rupiahs. January has not even passed, and the Government has realized it’s not enough. Last week, the Minister of Health Budi Sadikin asked the House of Representatives to revise the COVID-19 vaccine procurement budget up to 20.6 trillion. That’s only for the procurement of Sinovac’s CoronaVac vaccines. That number could grow given that Indonesia plans to procure vaccines from other makers this year. Realizing the massive fiscal burden, Minister Budi is lobbying GAVI to increase Indonesia’s share of free vaccines from the COVAX Facility.
