New SKK Migas Boss Promises Progress on Masela and IDD

The New Head of the Special Task Force for Upstream Oil and Gas Business Activities (SKK Migas) is Dwi Soetjipto. This confirms our previous report on the rumors of his name being mentioned as a potential. Dwi has experience in the oil and gas sector for he was the President Director of PT Pertamina. The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has put a lot of expectations on his shoulder, particularly with the work on increasing national oil production target, so the Vice Minister of ESDM Arcandra Tahar told us on Dec. 3.

A Red Alert for OSO and Hanura?

The House of Representatives (DPR) has sworn in four lawmakers for the Hanura Party—after some of the Party’s lawmakers had decided to leave them behind for the Nasdem Party. In the meantime, Hanura’s  Chairman Oesman Sapta Odang (OSO) might fail to enter the 2019 legislative election. The General Election Commission (KPU) has the option to cancel his candidacy for the Regional Representative Council (DPD).

Bank Artha Graha v. Mulyana Husodho, et al

On November 21, 2018, the South Jakarta District Court registered a default lawsuit filed by PT Bank Artha Graha Internasional Tbk (INPC) against one Jack Mulyana Husodho and five other parties. Bank Artha Graha accuses the parties of having defaulted and demands a compensation of nearly Rp1 trillion. The published information on the lawsuit does not provide details on the cause of the dispute, but there is something interesting linked to the parties and also linked to the ongoing dispute between PT Bank China Construction Bank Indonesia Tbk (MCOR), Fireworks Ventures Limited, PT Geria Wijaya Prestige (GWP), and Bank Artha Graha’s patron Tomy Winata.

Last week, the Corruption Court of the Central Jakarta District Court held the first hearing on the trial of Eni Maulani Saragih, the former Deputy Chairman of the House Commission VIII of the House of Representative (Golkar), who is a defendant in the Riau Power Plant graft case. The indictment prepared for Eni mentioned that in addition of receiving bribes from Johannes Kotjo, Eni had also received grafts from four businessmen, including the President Director of  PT Smelting Indonesia. PT Smelting quickly announced their rebuttal to the indictment. Separately, the bankruptcy process of PT Sariwangi Agricultural Estate Agency (Sari Wangi AEA Co Ltd – Sariwangi) and its subsidiary PT Maskapai Perkebunan Indorub Sumber Wadung (Indorub) continued when the Panel of Judges declared the Companies insolvency per November 30, 2018. The Companies are deemed incapable to repay their debts.

Inflation & Rupiah

Inflation has accelerated for a second straight month, as it reached 3.23% year on year (y/y) in November 2018 (higher than expected), but this would create some optimism that there has been an improvement in household consumption. If there has indeed been an improvement, it would be great good news for the whole economy as household consumption accounts for around 55% of Indonesia’s gross domestic product (GDP).
