The Mayor of Bandung Ridwan Kamil decided not to run in the 2017 Jakarta gubernatorial election, even though Gerindra and PKS were very keen on having him as their lead candidate. Aside from Tri Rismaharini of PDI-P, Ridwan is largely seen as a political figure who would be able to put up a good fight against the extremely popular incumbent, Governor Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama.
