The Government of Indonesia issued the mineral export ban in January 14, 2014, all mining companies are required to build a smelting facility in country. But since then, exception were made for big companies like PT Freeport Indonesia and PT Newmont Nusa Tenggara under the condition that said companies regularly report on the progress of building their smelter. No progress means no exception. To date, Freeport Indonesia, has not been able to demonstrate any progress on developing the smelter they intend to build in Gresik, East Java, even though Freeport Indonesia had chosen Mitsubishi Material Corp to build their smelter in 2015.
