General (ret.) Wiranto is not as powerful as he was in 1998—when he was the Commander of ABRI (the previous name of the Indonesian Military (TNI) and the National Police (POLRI)), and the Coordinating Minister for Defense & Security—and 2004—when he won the Golkar Party’s presidential primary.
