The nomination of Commissioner General Budi Gunawan as Chief of National Police took a dramatic turn when the general was named a suspect in a graft investigation. The drama ended with President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s decision to withhold Budi Gunawan’s appointment, despite overwhelming approval from the House of Representatives (DPR). An interesting side event happened prior to the President’s press conference: the Chief of Criminal Investigation (Kabareskrim) Suhardy Alius was discharged from his post.
