I often heard people say, “Unless you are Javanese and Muslim, you would never become the leader of the country, not as a president or a vice president.” That statement is not 100 percent correct. Adam Malik Batubara, the Third Vice President, was a Batak Mandailing; BJ Habibie, the Seventh Vice President, is of Bugis Javanese descent, Hamsah Haz, the Ninth Vice President, Indonesian Malay; and Jusuf Kalla, the Tenth Vice President, is of Bugis descent. All of them, however, are Muslims. So when will have a Non-Muslim (vice) president? Could Indonesia ever accept such a condition?
