A lot of people have asked me why the chairwoman of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P), Megawati Soekarnoputri, prefers to prolong the decision on who will be PDI-P’s presidential candidate, instead of announcing Joko “Jokowi” Widodo as her pick right away. In so doing, she appears to ignore the rapidly growing support for Jokowi and the various surveys pointing to the Governor of Jakarta as the presidential candidate to beat. So let’s talk about that. Why wait and what are the implications?
