Batavia (Jakarta) was developed in early 17th century as waterfront city with canals, pretty much like Amsterdam. Series of flooding in early 20th century triggered Dutch colonialist to develop the West and East Flood Canal to control water volume discharged to the city through 13 rivers. One century later, floods hit Jakarta even worse, while the flood canals have not been in place.
