It’s a punishing morning for President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY). The President’s Democratic Party walked out from the House of Representatives (DPR) plenary session late last night. As such, the majority of lawmakers left voted for the passage of a Regional Elections Bill that effectively eliminates the people’s right to elect their mayors, regents, and governors. Regional leaders, from here onwards, are to be elected by members of the regional representatives council (DPRD). Who’s to blame?
