President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo signed Government Regulation (PP) No. 53/2023 recently. The public was enraged by the provisions which were considered to provide a loophole for injustice because it allowed regional leaders to take part as presidential or vice presidential candidates in the upcoming 2024 election without having to resign from their positions. Mainstream media and the public accused that the regulation was made to accommodate Gibran Rakabuming Raka’s participation.
