Japan logged a trade deficit of JPY1415 billion in January 2019, compared to a JPY 948 billion shortfall a year earlier. Imports edged down 0.6% (vs +1.9% in December) to JPY6.99 trillion, despite a 7.7% climb in purchases from the US, whereas exports declined 8.4% (vs -3.8% in December) to JPY5.57 trillion, mainly dragged by a 17.4% plunge in sales to China.
