The post-reformasi Golkar is arguably the most dynamic political party in Indonesia. Key leaders of the party joust for leadership at almost every political year. In 2004, Jusuf Kalla defeated Golkar’s transition leader Akbar Tandjung in the party’s chairmanship congress. But Kalla won much more than the leadership of Golkar, his decision to join the then popular presidential candidate Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) earned him a seat in the second most powerful position in the country, the Vice Presidency.
