Temporary relief
Asian equity markets recorded gains Tuesday (Feb 4) morning after Trump agreed to delay tariffs on Mexico and Canada for one month, while the planned additional 10% tariffs on China are still set to take effect today. Further rally is pending outcome of a scheduled meeting between Trump and Chinese president XI Jinping this week.
Nickel production cut?
Nickel ended lower by 0.71% to US$15,122 in the London Metal Exchange (LME) Monday (Feb 3) amidst doubts over production cut in Indonesia. The commodity rallied from US$15,000 to as high as US$16,000 in the first two weeks of 2025 on the production cut speculation, but has since retreated to the lowest level since October 2020.
All out for free meal
Pictures of long queue of people waiting to buy subsidised LPG, the main cooking fuel for Indonesian households, intensified pressures to energy & mineral resources minister Bahlil Lahadalia to revoke his policy on distribution of the strategic commodity. The policy was designed to significantly reduce leakages in the LPG subsidy, but it angered a lot of people.
Danantara & The New SOEs Law
The House of Representatives (DPR) is scheduled to deliberate a new law on state-owned companies in its plenary session today (Feb 4), paving the way for the establishment of BP Danantara. While there are some new changes, including inclusion of business judgement rule, Danantara is the main attention in the new law.

Composite index of Indonesia Stock Exchange/IDX (IHSG) opened lower by 1.5% to track regional and global market rout stemmed from Trump’s trade war against Canada, Mexico, and China. Hang Seng Index also fell nearly 2% in Hong Kong Monday (Feb 3) on the same issue.
REPT Battero & Indonesian Interests
REPT Battero Energy Co Ltd, a leading manufacturer of EV battery and energy storage system (ESS) battery, launched initial public offering in December 2023 to raise US$271 million. The stock, listed on the HK Stock Exchange (HKEX), however, collapsed more than 40% to HK$11 last week to make a market capitalisation of HK$25 billion.
A global market rout
KOSPI composite index fell 2.9% Monday (Feb 3) morning in Seoul, while Nikkei 225 lost 2.4% in the opening hour as investors digested global implication of tariff bombs dropped by US President Donald Trump over the weekend.
Market correction on the looming escalated trade war
All Ordinaries fell nearly 2% this morning in Sydney as investors worried on possible escalation of trade war triggered by Trump’s decision to impose 25% tariffs on Canada and Mexico plus add-on 10% tariff on China. Canada and Mexico have immediately responded with their respective plans to introduce retaliatory tariffs, while China is reviewing its options.
Lacklustre performance of Aneka Tambang
Shares of state mining company Aneka Tambang (ANTM) ended lower by 0.36% Friday (Jan 31) due to weak price of nickel. Investors were also not impressed by operational data for full year 2024 released by ANTM that day, where nickel production declined significantly from the previous year.
