The management and distribution of clean water in Jakarta has been handled by PT PAM Lyonnaise Jaya (PALYJA) and PT Thames PAM Jaya (TPJ) since 1998 — the move known as the privatization of Jakarta water management. Both companies, however, have not been able to provide access to clean water for all residents of the capital city. Enraged, a group of residents and civil society organizations formed a coalition and filed a class action suit against the Government of Indonesia and the Jakarta Administration demanding the court to annul the direct appointment of both PALYJA and TPJ and consequently the contract between the latter and both companies.
