Global stock markets were mixed on Thursday (July 9) as investors feared that a spike in coronavirus cases worldwide could hamper the global economic recovery. In the United States (US), investors assessed mounting coronavirus cases and hospitalizations in multiple US states against mixed corporate and economic data. On the COVID front, the WHO warned that the pandemic is accelerating around the globe, while health advisor Dr. Anthony Fauci also warned that the situation in the US remains grave. On the macro side, new claims for unemployment benefits in the US exceeded 2 million last week.
