Kemang is known as an elite area in South Jakarta, with thrilling concept stores, high-end housing complex, and expatriate lodgings. But aside from it’s glitzy reputation, Kemang is also known for floods. The river Krukut runs across parts of Kemang. Aggressive property expansion over time took over the riverbanks, making the Krukut we know today less of a river, and more of a creek. Some of the Krukut riverbanks were meant to be water catchment area, but they’ve become elite housing complex, shopping destinations, hotels, and more. The Jakarta Government believes that this is the primary reason why Kemang gets flooded from time to time.
