President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo is likely to announce the name of the new Chief of the National Intelligence Agency (BIN) shortly after his return to Indonesia next week. At the moment, the strongest candidate for the position is As’ad Said Ali, a ex-BIN Deputy Chief of nine years. One of the most interesting things about As’ad Said Ali is the fact that he’s a civilian. It’s important to note that the Chief of BIN is a position traditionally reserved for (ex) military/police official.
