The Golkar Party had less role in the executive branch during President Megawati Soekarnoputri’s 2001-2004 administration. Back then, the Party was still in transition, from being the unified political force in Soeharto’s New Order to a group of really diverse and powerful business owners trying to shape a new unified Golkar. It was a difficult time for Golkar. A similar struggle for redetermining Golkar’s course is happening today. The big question being whether Golkar truly wants to be a part of the opposition.
