Back in May 2024, President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo signed Government Regulation (PP) No. 25/2024 which amends PP No. 96/2021 concerning Implementation of Mineral and Coal Mining Business Activities. The amendments contain several new clauses, including that special mining business license areas or WIUPK can be offered on a priority basis to business entities owned by religious community organizations. PBNU accepted the offer with open arms, however, PP Muhammadiyah indicated its rejection. This caused a commotion at the grassroots. Supporters of both organizations openly mocked each other because we know that Muhammadiyah has consistently criticized the Government. However, nearly two months later, Muhammadiyah somehow decided to accept the offer and once again caused public disappointment. Now, while the company owned by PBNU is waiting for its business permit, Muhammadiyah has reportedly provided two companies that will manage their mining area.
