About 10 years ago, Frost & Sullivan forecasted global consumption of fatty alcohol, raw material for surfactants—detergents, shampoo, etc, would reach 1.89 million tons in 2009 at a price of US$1200 per ton to create a market worth US$2.27 billion. By 2012, the consulting firm recorded global consumption of 2.2 million tons, way below installed capacity of 4 million tons.
