President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo took the oath of the new governors and vice governors for nine provinces, including the new Governor of South Sulawesi Nurdin Abdullah and his Vice Governor Andi Sudirman Sulaiman. Nurdin, therefore, will have the power to swear in the local leaders for regencies/municipalities in South Sulawesi province who was elected in the 2018 simultaneous regional elections. But the question is who will become the next mayor of Makassar, the capital city of South Sulawesi?

Munafri Arifuddin, the nephew of Vice President Jusuf Kalla, will challenge the incumbent Mayor of Makassar Mohammad Ramdhan “Danny” Pomanto in a head-to-head mayoral race this year. Makassar, the capital city of South Sulawesi, is the largest municipality out of the 24 municipalities/regencies in the province.
