Indonesia’s Future in Nickel

Like bauxite, Indonesia used to be the largest supplier of nickel ores for China. That was before mineral ore export ban implemented in early 2014. China then sourced nickel ores, amidst lower nickel content, from the Philippines, which were responsible for 83% of the country’s import last year (35.03 million tons). The government of Indonesia resumed export of low-grade nickel ores early last year, just when more Chinese companies building smelters in Sulawesi and North Maluku.

MCC Gets More in Indonesia

Metallurgical Corporation of China (MCC) Limited is clearly a global EPC firm to watch. Last year the Company signed contracts worth RMB602.8 billion, an increase of 20% from 2016, of which RMB57.29 billion worth of contracts were the newly signed overseas projects, including some projects in Indonesia.

Mineral Processing: Where Are We?

Nickel advanced 4.72% to US$12,642 per ton this week, representing 28.3% gain year-on-year. Aluminium, meanwhile, lost 3.1% this week, but gained 29.34% year-on-year. Looking at the current pace of development, Indonesia will dominate the world’s nickel market in three-five years time. The country will also improve its position in aluminium market.
