Indonesia booked trade deficit of US$677 million last month against surplus of US$1.43 billion in January 2017. This was mostly attributable to expansion of oil and gas deficit to US$860 million and downfall of surplus in non oil and gas to US$183 million. Not necessarily bad though. In fact, strong import of non oil and gas suggested strong domestic investments.

Import growth year-on-year and month-on-month were significantly higher than export. This is not necessarily bad. It is true that higher oil and gas prices in international market contributed to the situation, but import of non oil and gas products were also higher than import, which might be related to improved domestic economy.
