State-owned Bank Negara Indonesia (BNI) booked a net profit of Rp5.03 trillion in the first half (H1) of 2021, grew 12.8% year on year (y/y) as net interest income rose 18.2% to Rp19.32 trillion with a net interest margin (NIM) at 4.9%. Operating income also increased 19.2% to Rp27.79 trillion. The recovery contributed Rp1.05 trillion profit, a 71% y/y jump. While provisioning grew 36.2% y/y to Rp9.78 trillion. An increase in provisioning is part of the imperative strategy to build provision buffers to counter the future deterioration of loan books from COVID-19.
