The Indonesian rupiah fell 0.4% to 14,730 against the greenback on Tuesday at around 04:15 AM GMT as Indonesian workers were launching protests in several cities to oppose the passage a day earlier of a controversial new jobs law, sooner than its initial plan of Thursday. Meantime, Reuters reported that global investors managing US$4.1 trillion in assets had written to Indonesia’s government Tuesday to express concerns over the bill, for fears that it will have damaging consequences for the environment. Among those investors were Aviva Investors, Legal & General Investment Management, the Church of England Pensions Board, and Netherlands-based asset manager Robeco. On the data front, Indonesia’s consumer confidence hit its weakest in four months in September following the re-introducing of COVID-19 wide-scale social restrictions in mid-September in Jakarta.
