Last week, the Constitutional Court (MK) moved to grant the judicial review of the Anti-Corruption Law No. 31/1999 as later amended by Law 20/2001 and the judicial review of Electronic Information & Transaction Law (ITE) No. 11/2008. Both judicial review (JR) requests were filed by Golkar Politician Setya Novanto. When he filed the JR, Novanto was under investigation for allegedly abusing his authority as the speaker of the parliament by attempting to negotiate a contract extension for PT Freeport Indonesia. The then Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Sudirman Said was the person who revealed the scandal to the Public. Sudirman presented a recording of Novanto’s conversation with his friend businessman Muhammad Riza Chalid, and the then CEO of Freeport Indonesia Maroef Sjamsoeddin to the Attorney General’s Office and to the Parliament’s Ethics Body. Novanto filed the JR in a move to rule out the admissibility of the audio recording Sudirman Said provided to the Attorney General for investigating his alleged crime. To subscribe please click here
