Corruption Journal: Setya Novanto and Siti Masitha Soeparno’s Verdict

The Corruption Court at the Central Jakarta District Court read their verdict for Setya Novanto on April 24, 2018. Setya Novanto, who many believe to be the mastermind of the E-KTP graft case, was found guilty of all charges and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment. Separately, the disgraced Mayor of Tegal Siti Masitha “Sitha” Soeparno (Golkar), who was caught in a Sting Operation back in August 2017, was handed a punishment that is lighter compared to the punishment demanded by the prosecutors demands. The Panel of Judges of the Corruption Court at the Semarang District Court also dismissed the prosecutors’ demand to revoke Sitha’s political rights. Some evidence in the trial were disregarded.

The trial of Setya Novanto will end soon. Last week, he read his plea, maintaining his innocence and pointing fingers to other parties he believe responsible. The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) refused to respond to the plea.

The trail of Setya Novanto will end soon. Last week, the prosecutors read their demands in front of the Panel of Judges and at the same time rejected Setya Novanto’s proposal to be a Justice Collaborator. Also last week, the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) decided to seized a house in Pondok Indah, South Jakarta, registered on behalf of Emirsyah Satar. Emirsyah, as we all know, is now a suspect in the case of alleged corruption back when he was still the president director of Garuda Indonesia.

Corruption suspect Setya Novanto, former chairman of Golkar Party, mentioned some high-profile names in his trial today. They include Puan Maharani (daughter of Megawati Soekarnoputri, chairperson of PDI-P) and Pramono Anung (former deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives/DPR). They are both ministers in Jokowi-Kalla administration from PDI-P. Novanto mentioned three other names from PDI-P, two from Democratic Party, two from Golkar, and one from Islamic party PKS.

Update on the E-KTP Graft Case

The Corruption Court of the Central Jakarta District Court held the latest hearing of graft suspect Setya Novanto on March 12, 2018. It has been three months now after the court began the trial, but the case is so complicated that the prosecutors kept summoning more witnesses to testify. For the latest hearing, the prosecutors summoned several witnesses and an expert witness who said that the layered money trails in the case were indications of a planned money laundering scheme.

A transcript of conversation between several parties was revealed, including the investigation conducted by the FBI against one Johannes Marliem. The trial of Setya Novanto, the latest defendant in the case of alleged corruption related in the procurement of electronic identity card (E-KTP), continues on January 22, 2018. The hearing lasted for more than 12 hours. The most important witness in the hearing was one Made Oka Masagung, who supposedly helped Setya Novanto and other parties to disguise various financial transactions. On the same day, the same Corruption Court held the last hearing for Yunus Nafik, the president director of PT Aquamarine Divindo Inspection (ADI), who was found guilty of bribing one Tarmizi, the registrar of the South Jakarta District Court.
