Behind La Nyalla’s Allegations

Allegations mounted by La Nyalla Mahmud Mattalitti against Prabowo Subianto and Gerindra Party have heated up the country’s politics ahead of this year’s simultaneous regional elections and registration of president and vice president candidate for next year’s election. Some wonder why La Nyalla, accompanied by leaders of the so-called 212 Islamic Movement (contributing to the downfall of Ahok and the rise of Anies in Jakarta), issued the allegation hours after the Constitutional Court issued the verdict, which basically upholding the 20% presidential threshold?

Hell Hath No Fury Like La Nyalla Scorned

The former chairman of Indonesia’s football association (PSSI) La Nyalla Mattalitti was thought to be Gerindra’s candidate in East Java’s 2018 gubernatorial election. Banners with his photograph and the title “Gerindra’s prospective nominee” had already been hung in many regions in East Java. It was presumed that Gerindra had already settled their mind, but that was not the case. Gerindra ended up endorsing Syaefulah Yusuf instead. Heartbroken, La Nyalla held a press conference yesterday (Jan. 12) to spill some juice. Prabowo, he said, had asked him for billions of rupiah in order to secure Gerindra’s nomination. Gerindra’s Pick for East Java

This comes as no surprise given that La Nyalla has been widely mentioned as the frontrunner for securing Gerindra’s endorsement. The question now is whether La Nyalla can enter the race at all. Note that Gerindra cannot endorse a governor candidate on their own and their potential allies are moving closer towards endorsing either Saefullah Yusuf’s or Khofifah Indar Parawansa.

La Nyalla is Free

The High Prosecutor of East Java has been trying to ensnare the former Chairman of the Football Association of Indonesia (PSSI) La Nyalla Mattalitti for the graft that he allegedly committed during his tenure as chairman of the East Java Indonesian Chamber of Commerce (Kadin). La Nyalla was named a suspect but he filed a pre-trial lawsuit against the decision and won. The High Prosecutor, with the help of the Attorney General’s Office (AGO), however, insisted that La Nyalla must be held accountable. And so La Nyalla was once again named as a suspect. History repeats itself, until La Nyalla won all three pre-trial lawsuits he filed against the High Prosecutor. Unfazed, the prosecutors are determined to bring prosecute La Nyalla and so they named him a suspect for the fourth time. La Nyalla had faced his trial since September 2016, and on December 27, 2016, the Panel of Judges of the Corruption Court of the Central Jakarta District Court decided in favor of La Nyalla and acquitted him from all charges.

A Look Back on the Attorney General’s Office’s Performance (Part I)

After two years of running under the leadership of Attorney General H.M. Prasetyo (who was a prosecutor and a cadre of the National Democratic party) the performance of the Attorney General’s Office (AGO) is still far from satisfactory. Last year’s performance was marked with a lot of unfinished investigations and/or inquisitions. The AGO was unable to meet public expectation on the continuation of stalled cases. What about 2016?
