PKS’ Bizarre Relationship with Gerindra (2)

Gerindra Party politician Rahayu Saraswati Dhirakanya Djojohadikusumo (otherwise referred to as Saras), who is the daughter Hashim Djojohadikusumo (Prabowo Subianto’s brother), has been nominated for the position of vice governor of Jakarta. This happened just a few days after the Chairman of PKS Sohibul Iman told the press that Prabowo had said that the vice governorship was meant for PKS. Would this development make things worse between Gerindra and PKS?

PKS-Gerindra’s Bizarre Relation

PKS thought the vacant Jakarta vice governor position would be theirs in exchange for accepting Sandiaga Salahuddin Uno as Prabowo’s running mate in the 2019 race. But that’s not the case. PKS must still fight for the said position since the leaders of Gerindra’s Jakarta chapter also want the vice governorship. This is not the first time Gerindra has shown greed by overtaking positions allocated for PKS. But after all of those betrayals, PKS still remain Gerindra’s most loyal ally.

Zon also talked about Prabowo’s potential running mate. Previously, Zon repeatedly spoke of Gerindra cadres’ unified support of Prabowo’s bid in 2019. Zon also refuses the idea of Prabowo becoming a kingmaker and the idea of Prabowo becoming Jokowi’s running mate.

The Opposition Regroups

Opposition party Gerindra and PKS agreed to band together once more with PAN (which is supposed to be a member of President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo’s ruling coalition) in six gubernatorial elections (West Java, East Java, North Sumatera, East Kalimantan, and North Maluku). The Chairman of Gerindra Prabowo Subianto, the Chairman of PKS M. Sohibul Iman, and the Secretary General of PAN Eddy Soeparno confirmed their tripartite alliance in a press briefing. The three parties have come to an agreement on the pair to endorse in North Sumatera and Central Java. So this won’t be much of an issue. The same can’t be said with their alliance in the four other provinces.

Gerindra’s Pick for West Java

The Chairman of the opposition Gerindra Party Lt. Gen. (ret) Prabowo Subianto announced the name of the Party’s governor candidate for West Java’s 2018 gubernatorial election. He’s Maj. Gen. Note that Gerindra cannot endorse a governor candidate on their own. They simply do not have enough seats in the regional representative council of West Java to pass the nomination threshold.

The Chairman of the opposition Gerindra Party Prabowo Subianto is expected to announce the Party’s governor candidate for East Java, West Java, and Central Java next week. For now, it looks like Gerindra will endorse the third candidate, instead of joining either Saefullah Yusuf’s or Khofifah Indar Parawansa’s camp in East Java. The ruling party PDIP, meanwhile, cannot hide how angry they are with the decision of their cadre Emil Dardak, who is the regent of Trenggalek, to run as Khofifah’s running mate.
